It’s hard to say that iPhone isn’t a promising gaming platform. No wonder Apple always keeps moving forward in this field. As part of their roadmap, Apple is planning to offer a premium games section to its iTunes App Store, say sources. A range of iPhone and iPod Touch games will be sold for $19.99.

iphone_simcitySeems only large mobile games publishers like EA Mobile and Gameloft — rather than the thousands of ‘indie’ developers– could selling their titles in this section.

But, it’s fine.

From some viewpoints, introducing a premium games section to the App Store makes sense. Apple is keen to pitch iPhone and iPod touch as potential DS and PSP killers, but before they make the necessary investment in higher quality games, large publishers will surely want higher price points and more guarantee that these titles won’t get buried in the App Store crowd.

Archibald's Adventures Screenshot 1
Archibald's Adventures Archibald's Adventures Premise is simple - you’re an average kid in an average neighborhood with a somewhat kooky mad scientist living in the vicinity. Doing a mad trick on his skateboard at the city dump, Archibald ends up Professor Klumpfus’ basement. Alas, this is only the beginning of your troubles, as genetically engineered experiments are on the loose and the central computer decides to lock both you and the Professor in the mansion.
How do you get out you may ask? Well, luckily, Archibald is paired with his trusty skateboard and a good dose of wit to get himself out of the mess… and a few of the Professor’s zany inventions help to aid his escape.
Archibald’s Adventures by Rake in the Grass, is a mix between a platform side-scrolling arcade game and puzzle game. The intro is a montage of cute illustrations depicting Archie and his friends getting into trouble. From there, there is an on-screen directional pad that you touch to move Archie around. The mansion is full of hint machines that help you through each level and you build on those skills to solve more difficult puzzles later.
Archibald's Adventures Screenshot 2
The first stage of levels is relatively (to deceptively!) simple, but as you move through the stages and levels, the puzzles become increasingly more difficult. Timing is important as well as thinking out of the box.
I doubt I’ll be able to get through all 100+ levels anytime soon - I’m currently stuck mid-way through Stage 2, although you can try out various levels of the first three stages. I personally have some difficulty with the onscreen directional pad - sometimes either my fingers are in the wrong place or it’s unresponsive - either way, when I’m attempting to get through an obstacle and miss my window of opportunity and “die”, it’s frustrating.
Archibald's Adventures Screenshot 3
All in all, Archibald’s Adventures is a nice challenge for kids and adults alike. The art reminds me of early 16-bit games. The art is retro and easy to navigate. As far as I’ve seen, there aren’t any spooky surprises or timed levels (perhaps in later stages?) so you can take your time to solve all the puzzles at your own pace. There’s a lot of stages to unlock to complete the game, so don’t expect to finish it in one sitting!
The price of $7.99 might be a little steep for some, but considering it is a “basic” puzzle-adventure game. However, the sheer size of the Professor’s mansion might make up for it in actual game play time.
UPDATE: Rake in the Grass just released a FREE version called Archibald’s Adventures Lite which offers 32 levels of game play! This is a great way to try before you buy this great game!

Funny how I mentioned that we haven’t seen an iPhone OS update in a while and sure enough the same day I say it, an update comes out…albiet a small one. In any case, yesterday, Apple released a small 246 MB update to their iPhone/iTouch platform. Here’s what was included:

  • General bug fixes and improvements
  • Improved stability of Safari
  • Saving of images in Mail to the Camera Roll

In any case, the big changes that people were expecting was not the update that was delivered yesterday but rather we got a maintenance update. But, having this minor update makes me wonder, just when IS Apple planning their next major OS release.

I can’t help but wonder what changes are in store for us in the next big OS release…but until then, the hardest part will be the waiting. Be sure to let me know of any leads you may have, I’ll check them out and post them.

iFood Assistant Screen 1

Aspiring cook, busy working parent, or just plain looking for new recipes to add to your collection? Or perhaps all of the above? The KRAFT iFood Assistant application iFood Assistant by KRAFT might be a handy-dandy solution for you.
Upon starting up the application for the first time, it may ask you to log-in or create an account for kraftfoods.com. This is the main online resource for all the tips, recipes, videos, and other dining ideas. If you prefer to read your recipes on your paper, you can easily print directly from the web.
At first glance, the application is very well thought out - clean interface with selections based on the type of meal you are making (snack, breakfast, entree, appetizers, desserts, etc.) and breaks it down according to what you main ingredient may be (beef, chicken, vegetarian, etc.) Each recipe features not only a crisp photo of the finished product, but also the serving size, ingredients, and nutritional value. The recipes range from basic to advanced - and the best part of all the recipes is that most of the ingredients can easily be found at your local supermarket.  Of course, KRAFT being the maker of the application, expect to find many KRAFT-related products on your list. Marketing ploy or not, this really helps to simplify the grocery list and in the long-run possibly save money on ingredients - especially for the occasional cook.
iFood Assistant Screen 2
When browsing the recipes and reading the instructions, you can turn your iPod Touch/iPhone to its side to zoom in on each direction and swipe right to left to view each step on its own card.
The “shopping list” and “recipe box” features are especially nice. They act like bookmarks, so you don’t have to constantly return to the menus to search for something. By clicking on the “shopping list” button, it will automatically compile a neat list of items you will need the next time you hit the supermarket. If you prefer to shop per meal, it can also break your list down by recipe.

iFood Assistant Screen 3

When connected via Wi-Fi, you can access videos of various recipes. Depending on your connection, it may take some time to load, so be patient - I had a few instances when I started the video too early, found it got stuck in the middle waiting to cue, reversed it a little to re-watch some directions and crashed to app. The demonstrations are quick and concise, and very easy to follow.
I wanted to test out a few of the recipes myself and chose a couple dinner entrees: the Tangy Curried Chicken and Fiesta Chili Mac

iFood Assistant Screen 4

The Tangy Curried Chicken was incredibly easy to make. Just mix KRAFT Sandwich Spread (which I had never heard of prior to this!), lemon juice, curry powder, and ground red pepper in a bowl. Pour and coat on chicken thighs, chop up some onions and cook in a skillet/frying pan.
Tangy Curried Chicken 1
Tangy Curried Chicken 2
The end result was a little charred on some spots, but quite delicious. I served mine with white rice and a spinach salad. Highly recommended for a quick meal.
The Fiesta Chili Mac was a little more advanced, as it involves the browning of ground beef, draining, and simmering in a stock pot. I actually had more trouble finding the Taco Bell “Home Originals” Salsa and Taco Sauce and ended up buying something similar. Each of the recipes leaves some wiggle room to experiment and embellish, so I seasoned my ground beef with a homemade taco seasoning made from spices in my cabinet to sub out some of the Taco Sauce. (I really didn’t want to use the whole bottle, considering I use half-a-packet when I eat my food at Taco Bell…) I followed the rest of the recipe according to the directions.
Fiesta Chili Mac
The end result tasted great! The salsa gave the chili a nice variety of flavors and the macaroni cooked tender. In fact, it was even better the second day as leftovers as the spices and flavors all had ample time to really season the food. The beans also gave the chili a nice texture (and extra fiber which is great for everyone!)
Once you’ve tried your selected recipes, you can always go back into the app and leave your own comments and ratings. Viewing others’ comments is also helpful to get ideas for substituting or even adding ingredients.
In review, I found that it can be tough to effectively cook and refer back to the instructions before the screen went black. Also, dripping food on the iPhone isn’t necessarily a good idea, so keeping it out of harm’s way was also a priority. It doesn’t take long to load up after you swipe past the main screen, but it can be problematic if your hands are dirty. In retrospect, it might have been better to just print out the recipes or at least memorize most of the steps.
I should also note that this application is not necessarily for “absolute beginner” cooks. If you know the basics like browning meat, draining pasta, boiling water, etc, you’ll probably do fine navigating your way around the kitchen with these recipes. If the kitchen is something that you are clueless about, I suggest watching some of the videos to get started.
For 99 cents, the KRAFT iFood Assistant app is a great value for anyone looking for quick and easy - and delicious - meals.
