As expected, Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference for 2009 has sold out. In the June 8th event, iPhone and Mac OS X developers could use the opportunity to code alongside Apple’s own IT team.

wwdc09_sold_outThe event is also expected to coincide with Apple releasing the iPhone and iPod touch firmware 3.0. The new firmware will bring several new features to the devices.

Key changes of iPhone OS 3.0 beta include the requirement for 10.5.7 or later in order to synchronize the new Notes apps.  iTunes 8.2 now allows users to play music on their computer while updating their iPhone or iPod touch with new software.

As June quickly approaches along with the hotly anticipated release of iPhone OS 3.0, Apple has issued another beta release…Yesterday, on schedule, Apple released iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4 and although no new features have yet been uncovered, I’m almost certain in the next few days, the code hackers will discover anything of importance.

In other news, it seems that the latest version of iTunes, 8.2 beta, includes reference to Gracenote…that possibly points to recognizing the Blu-Ray format. We’re not exactly sure what this means however we’ll keep an eye on this and report if there are any new developments…

Newo Corp. has released the iLauncher iPhone and iPod touch application for use with the Newo “Dream Cheeky” USB Missile Launcher, allowing owners of the USB Missile Launcher full control from their iPhone over their home or work Wi-Fi network.

ilauncher-and-usb-missile-launcherBefore using the one and only robotic remote control missile launcher for the iPhone or iTouch (according to the retailer, but I also think so), you should download Windows-only software that detects the IP address of the computer attached to the USB Missile Launcher.

The iLauncher application is now available on the Apple App Store for f $2.99 (includes the PC application), while the USB Missile Launcher is available from Newo Corporation’s online store for $29.99 (but the good thing is that for a limited time, Newo is offering a 15% discount by entering “ilauncher” in the voucher/coupon code section when you buy it!)

Meanwhile check out the video below and see the gadget in action!

Yesterday, Amazon.com purchased the company behind the leading ebook reader application for the iPhone/iTouch platforms, Stanza.

Downloaded more than 1 million times, Stanza lets users access over 10,000 eBooks 24 hours a day. Stanza currently supports the ePub format which currently the Kindle does not. Current users of Stanza were told not to worry as changes aren’t planned. “We are not planning any changes in the Stanza application or user experience as a result of the acquisition.”
Keep an eye on this space as more news develops…

Today the New York Times is reporting that Amazon has bought out Lexcycle, the company behind the excellent Stanza ebook reader for the iPhone. No financial details were disclosed. By this move, Amazon seems strengthening its presence on the iPhone and iPod Touch.

According to Lexcycle’s blog:

We are not planning any changes in the Stanza application or user experience as a result of the acquisition. Customers will still be able to browse, buy, and read ebooks from our many content partners. We look forward to offering future products and services that we hope will resonate with our passionate readers.

We are excited to join forces with a company that has innovated on behalf of readers for over a decade and is a pioneer in ebooks. Like Amazon, we believe there is a lot of innovation ahead for ebooks and we could not think of a better company to join during this exciting time.

It seems with the ending of the Apple/AT&T contract imminent, Verizon and Apple have renewed talks on bringing the iPhone to the nation’s largest network, according to sources at USA Today. And though very little details have been divulged, all signs point to a 2010 target release date at the earliest.

Things are heating up as I’m sure AT&T is not willing to let the iPhone get away so easily…In their most recent revenue filing (1st Q 2009), AT&T showed they have 1.6 million activations of the iPhone 3G and on top of that, 40% of those were new activations.
The battle of the networks is heating up and Apple’s right in the middle…stay tuned for more information in the upcoming weeks…

Team17 has revealed these exclusive pictures of their classic invertebrate artillery game, Worms, playing on an iPhone. The classic version of Worms first released in 1995 and now they are bringing their original version to the iPhone.  Yeah, it’s a logical step since iPhone has became a popular gaming platform.

…the iPhone title uses a 2D environment in which the idea is to destroy your opponent’s team of militant worms.  Players take it in turns to launch various weapons, including exploding sheep, with the winner of each round either the first to wipe their rivals out, or the person with the most health points left when the time runs out.

On the iPhone and iPod touch, the touchscreen is used for aiming and scrolling, with pinch-zooming seemingly supported for navigation around the 2D game area.  We’re hoping there are both local and remote two-player modes, where you can either play against friends by passing the iPhone between you, or over an internet connection.

Judging by these screenshots, seems Worms for iPhone and iPod touch will be available on the App Store very soon.
