Nokia is capitalising on the iPhone’s closed architecture to promote the virtues of its own, open, handsets.
Their latest advertising campaign in the US features tag lines such as “Phones should be open to anything” and “The best devices have no limits”.
Their N-Series microsite focuses heavily on the word “open”:
We believe the best devices have no limits. That’s why we’ve left the Nokia Nseries open. Open to applications. Open to widgets. Open to anything. So go ahead and load it up. What it does is up to you.
Whether they’ll lure anyone away from the iPhone remains to be seen. I’ve certainly read a few comments from disgruntled iPhone users who say they’ll hop over to Nokia, even though they don’t like the handsets so much.
Then again, no-one was forced to buy an iPhone, and we all knew that it was (officially) closed right from the start. It’d be great to open it up properly, though, Steve.
